Homework on 2nd qtr topics (Due Monday, Oct 11)

Since Talens wanted it to be posted.........

HOMEWORK
Write your answers in your notebook. Please clearly label it as HOMEWORK, so I won’t miss it when I check your notes. These questions will help you review for the periodic exam, so PLEASE DO NOT CRAM this AFTER the perio.

1. The diameter of the field of view is related to the magnifying power of the objective being used:
LPO diameter x LPO magnification = HPO diameter x HPO magnification
If a particular microscope has a field of view with a diameter of 2mm under LPO, what is the diameter of the field of view under HPO?
2. Which statement in the cell theory is the equivalent of the Latin phrase ‘omnis cellula e cellula’?
3. Why must cells remain small? (Hint: see Chapter 8)
4. Mitchondria and chloroplasts have a certain degree of independence compared to the other cellular organelles. They have their own genetic material, and produce the enzymes needed for the reactions that take place inside of them. Name the scientist mentioned in Chapter 16 who proposed that these organelles are probably descendants of once independent cells (a statement that is part of the Endosymbiotic Hypothesis). (Hint: Origin of Complex Cells)
5. How do vaccines protect us from diseases?
6. DNA, which is a two-stranded molecule, is less likely to mutate (change) compared to RNA, which is a single-stranded molecule. Based on this information, as well as your answer to the previous question, why is it then difficult to produce vaccines against retroviruses?
7. What is a prion?
8. What is a viroid?
